Two Types of Diurnal Variations in Heavy Rainfall during July over Korea

Abstract This study examined the characteristics of diurnal variations heavy rainfall (⩾110 mm in 12 hours) Korea and related atmospheric circulation for July from 1980–2020. During analysis period, two dominant pattens variation emerged: all-day (AD) morning only (MO) types. For AD-type, is caused by abundant moisture content conjunction with active convection (0000–1200, LST; LST = UTC + 9) afternoon hours (1200–2400 LST). These systems are to enhanced inflow upward motion induced strengthening western North Pacific subtropical high upper-tropospheric jet. MO-type, occurs mostly hours; associated patterns similar climatology. We find that pattern severe rainfalls 2020 corresponds a typical AD-type resembles 1991 heavy-rainfall system its overall synoptic/mesoscale circulations. The present results imply extremely episodes during summer may occur again future recurring phenomenon rainfall.
